First Time Using a Drink Testing Strip? Here's Your Guide

When I first got a drink testing strip, I was a bit worried it would be complicated to use. But once I actually tried it, I found it much simpler than expected—just a few small details to keep in mind.

After opening the package, don't rush to tear off the strip. I usually prepare the drink to be tested first, pouring it into a clean transparent glass, about half full is enough. Make sure to wait until the liquid returns to room temperature—if you test it right out of the fridge, the temperature will affect the color reaction. Meanwhile, take a look at the reference color chart in the instructions, and distinguish the dipping end from the handheld end so you don't hold it upside down.

When you start testing, gently dip the indicator part of the strip into the drink for about two to three seconds—no need to submerge the whole thing. After taking it out, lightly scrape off excess liquid against the rim of the glass, and lay it flat on a dry paper towel. Then comes the waiting: usually one to two minutes for the color to stabilize. During this time, I don't move it or breathe on the strip, to avoid moisture affecting the result.

What surprised me most was how obvious the differences were between drinks. On the same type of strip, pure tea, juice, and carbonated drinks all show completely different color bands. Then just place the strip next to the color chart and compare under natural light—it's easy to find the closest match. If the color falls between two blocks, take a closer look and pick the one it's nearer to.

After finishing, I jot down the drink name and the result. I originally planned to test just one, but later found it interesting to test a few common drinks at home and compare them. The strips are disposable, but the sample cups can be rinsed and reused. The whole process takes only two or three minutes—it's not as complicated as I imagined. If you're also a first-timer, don't be too nervous; follow these steps and you won't mess it up. Once you know the result, you can drink with more peace of mind.
